Overview on the Ghana Law Society

The Ghana Law Society is the main regulatory body for the conduct and administration of legal education and profession in Ghana.  By its setup, the council is empowered and authorized to determine the policy and focus of legal education and training as well as the regulation of professional legal practice and ancillary matters.

The serving Chief Justice is the Chairperson of the Council, and the Judicial Secretary is its Secretary together with other appointed members including the three senior most Supreme Court Justices, the Attorney-General and her nominee, the President, Vice and Secretary of the Ghana Bar Association and the Ashanti Regional Bar President.

Conventionally, the Ghana Law Society on every first Friday of October, convenes a formal meeting to enroll and call to the Ghana Bar, candidates who have successfully passed the Professional Law Examination.

The membership of the Council reflects a balance between academics, legal practitioners and judges which represents the various facets of legal education, training and practice.

Handcuffs, “Epa” is a symbol of law and justice, slavery and captivity. Adolph Agbo in “Values of Adinkra Symbols” notes that handcuffs were introduced in Africa as a result of the slave trade and later became popular among chiefs in restraining offenders of the law. “The Symbol reminds offenders of the uncompromising nature of the law. It however discourages all forms of slavery”

Blue often represents freedom, vigilance, perseverance, justice, prosperity, peace and or patriotism.

The olive branch symbolizes peace and victory.

Accredited Law Faculties

Pursuant to the provisions of the Legal Profession Act and the GLS’s relationship to the National Accreditation Board, the Ghana Law Society has commenced a process of evaluation and accreditation of faculties of Law in Ghana. At the conclusion of the process, the names of duly accredited Faculties of Law will be exhibited on this page.
